Milestones

Some work is bigger than a single task. A milestone is a goal you’re working toward, with a progress indicator that shows how close you are, and the individual tasks that build toward it grouped underneath.

What a milestone is

A regular task is one thing to do. A milestone is bigger: a goal like “Ship the v2 launch” or “Get to a 10K race,” made up of several child tasks that need to happen along the way. Instead of a due time, a milestone shows a progress indicator, so at a glance you know how close the goal is to done, not just what’s next.

Progress, not a checkbox

You never mark a milestone complete by hand. Its progress is always calculated from its child tasks: how many are done out of how many exist. Finish the last one and the goal finishes itself.

The milestone card on your board

On your day board, a milestone looks like a task card with two differences: a diamond glyph in place of the usual checkbox, and a progress bar under the title instead of a time. Below the progress bar sits a small control row: a due date, a collapse-subtasks toggle, and tags, the same controls a regular task card has.

A milestone is a bigger goal that lives on your board.

The bar fills automatically as those child tasks get checked off, from anywhere, the board, the milestone’s own detail modal, or a child task’s own detail view. There’s nothing else to update. The collapse-subtasks toggle in the control row shows or hides the child task list right there on the card, so you can peek at what’s left without opening anything.

How child tasks group under it

Each child task is a normal task with its own day, time, priority, and tags. It just belongs to the milestone. That means the individual pieces can spread across your week wherever they actually fit, while the milestone card gives you one place to see how the whole effort is tracking. A child task can even repeat (a daily habit toward a fitness goal, say), and its sessions still roll up into the same progress bar.

  1. Create a milestone the same way you create a task, then add child tasks under it.
  2. Work the child tasks on whatever day and time makes sense for each one.
  3. Watch the milestone’s progress bar move on its own as they’re checked off.

Plan a milestone with Luna

Describe a goal and Luna can lay out the child tasks and schedule them across your calendar. See Smart task creation and The Plan page.

Opening a milestone shows all of its child tasks in a spreadsheet-style table where you can edit each one’s date, time, priority, and tags, and where completing every last one completes the milestone. See The milestone detail modal.

Description and attachments

A milestone also carries its own description and attachments section, exactly like a regular task. Use the description to capture the plan or the context for the goal, and drop in files or links the way you would on any task. Those sections work identically for milestones, so see the task detail modal page to learn how they work.
